Montecristo Edmundo Reserva Cosecha 2018 Goes on Sale in Switzerland

At current exchange rates, these are $200 per cigar. Not that long ago, a Reserva in Switzerland would have an SRP of around $50-60. Like any other commercial object or service, something is worth what a customer is willing to pay for it. I tend to think that has more to do with the person’s financial resources than the product itself, but that’s a different discussion. My philosophical question on Cuban cigar prices like this: does Habanos think that it previously underpriced all these cigars or is it just taking advantage of the supply-demand ratio being completely out of whack?

FDA Sued Over Menthol Cigarette Ban Delay

First, this does not have any direct effect on the FDA’s plans to ban the sales of flavored cigars. Given that pre-trial conferences are scheduled for July, it’s going to take a lot of things to go a certain way for this lawsuit to actually matter. By the time this thing goes to oral arguments, the election will have long since passed. If Biden wins and these final rules still aren’t announced, I imagine that will happen sooner rather than later. If Trump wins, who knows. As anti-regulation as the Trump administration was, that stance didn’t seem to extend to tobacco regulations.

Vermont Governor Vetoes Flavored Tobacco Sales Ban

One of the most common arguments I hear in regard to tobacco regulation is whataboutism of marijuana. How can FDA do this to cigars with marijuana being legal? Answer: marijuana is federally illegal, and FDA doesn’t have regulatory authority over cannabis. On a statewide level, the arguments about how the sales of marijuana edibles in California make it hypocritical to ban the sale of flavored cigars haven’t been persuasive to the people making laws. Last Wednesday, Gov. Phil Scott of Vermont used this whataboutism as a reason for vetoing a ban on flavored tobacco sales. It’s perhaps the only instance I’ve seen of this argument explicitly resulting in policy. A rare victory and one worth celebrating.
