Gurkha has begun shipping its exclusive release for the Tobacconists’ Association of America (TAA), the Nicaraguan Colección Especial.

The cigar is a Nicaraguan puro that the company describes as being medium-full in body, and is being released in a a 6 1/8 x 54 piramide vitola. Production is limited to 1,500 acrylic cases of 10 cigars, with pricing set at $15 per cigar and $150 per box.

The company has not announced which factory is producing the line, which is a follow-up to the Gurkha Colección Especial, and which also debuted as an exclusive to the TAA in 2022 before going on to become a regular production line in three different sizes later that year. In a press release, it describe the cigar as being “a very special and limited project in a brand new shape, wrapper and country of origin.”

The TAA is a fairly small group of some of the country’s top tobacconists, about 80 retailers, as well as 40 or so manufacturers. The association gathers annually to discuss issues facing the industry and retailers, as well as to have its annual trade show, a unique event that works on a group buying format in order to secure exclusive deals for these generally high-volume merchants.

A number of manufacturers produce exclusive cigars for the organization each year as part of the TAA’s Exclusive Series Program. The 2023 group includes cigars from Villiger, Kristoff, Plasencia, Tatuaje, Quesada, C.L.E., Miami Cigar & Co., Ferio Tego, Joya de Nicaragua, Espinosa, E.P. Carrillo, La Palina, General Cigar Co., Forged Cigar Co., My Father, J.C. Newman, Rocky Patel, Quality Importers Trading Co. and Crowned Heads.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
