Rojas Cigars’ Elote Firecracker, a project it is releasing with United Cigars, is on its way to stores today.

It is the newest member of United Cigars’ Firecracker Series, cigars that are typically a 3 1/2 x 50 petit robusto and have a long twist of tobacco coming off the cap that is designed to replicate the fuse of a firecracker. Over the years, various manufacturers have made Firecracker Series including Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, El ArtistaFratelloKristoff, La Flor Dominicana, My Father, Perdomo, RoMa Craft Tobac, Selected Tobacco and Tatuaje. While the collection was initially released in celebration of the Fourth of July holiday, it has recently expanded with releases for St. Patrick’s Day, baseball’s Opening Day, and now Cinco de Mayo.

The Elote Firecracker is an extension to Rojas’ Street Tacos Barbacoa line; it gets its name from a dish of seasoned corn often served by street vendors as well as traditional restaurants. It uses the Barbacoa’s blend, with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper atop a Nicaraguan binder and filler. In keeping with the Firecracker theme, however, the cigar is expected to be a bit stronger and punchier than the other vitolas in the line.

“Worlds collided when I first smoked the Street Taco from Rojas,” said Oliver Nivaud, director of operations for United Cigars, in a press release. “My love of street tacos is well known, and the Elote Firecracker now completes my cravings as a smokable antojito.”

The Elote Firecracker comes in a 3 1/2 x 50 petite robusto vitola with pricing set at $8 per cigar. It’s a very limited release, with just 200 boxes of 16 cigars, or 3,200 cigars produced by Tabacalera Flor de San Luis in Nicaragua.

The cigars are available through United Cigars retailers.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
