In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, United Cigars and Rojas Cigars have teamed up to create a new cigar called the Elote Firecracker.
The cigar is an extension to Rojas’ Street Tacos Barbacoa line; elote is a dish of seasoned corn often served by street vendors. It uses the Barbacoa’s blend, meaning an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper atop a Nicaraguan binder and filler. However, given that it is also part of United Cigars’ Firecracker Series, it is expected to have more punch than the three regular production vitolas in the Barbacoa line.
The Elote Firecracker comes in a 3 1/2 x 50 petite robusto vitola, the same size as the majority of cigars in United Cigars’ Fourth of July-themed Firecracker Series are offered. The MSRP is set at $8 per cigar. Production is limited to 200 boxes of 16 cigars, which Rojas Cigars produced at Tabacalera Flor de San Luis in Nicaragua.
The cigars are expected to ship to United Cigars retailers on April 17.
“Worlds collided when I first smoked the Street Taco from Rojas,” said Oliver Nivaud, director of operations for United Cigars, in a press release. “My love of street tacos is well known, and the Elote Firecracker now completes my cravings as a smokable antojito.”
The companies announced the Elote Firecracker via Cigar Aficionado, with a representative from United Cigars confirming the accuracy of that report.
The roots of the Firecracker Series date back to 2007 and Two Guys Smoke Shop, a New Hampshire-based chain of retailers owned by Dave Garofalo, who also owns United. The Firecracker cigars are typically a 3 1/2 x 50 petit robusto that features a long pigtail. Over the years, various manufacturers have made Firecracker Series including Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, El Artista, Fratello, Kristoff, La Flor Dominicana, My Father, Perdomo, RoMa Craft Tobac, Selected Tobacco and Tatuaje.
