During next month’s PCA Convention & Trade Show, Gurkha Cigars will debut its first cigar celebrating the Chinese New Year and the zodiac calendar.

The Year of the Dragon 2024 is a 6 3/4 x 52 figurado priced at $25 each. According to a press release, the new limited edition line will consist of only 1,000 individually numbered 15-count “red piano finish boxes with ornate gold dragons on top.” In Chinese culture, red symbolizes good fortune and joy; while yellow or gold symbolizes wealth.

While Gurkha is not disclosing any details about the “proprietary blend” of the Year of the Dragon 2024, the company has confirmed that the cigars are being produced at the Tabacalera El Artista factory in the Dominican Republic. In addition, a press release indicates that the cigars will be “offered by invitation only at the PCA Convention.”

Gurkha joins a list of companies that have made cigars to commemorate the Chinese New Year, including Davidoff, Drew Estate, Habanos S.A., Maya Selva, Plasencia, Scandinavian Tobacco Group and Tabacalera S.L.U.

In an email, Bianca Lopez, director of marketing for Gurkha, told halfwheel that the cigars are scheduled to ship to retailers in September, but she stated that packaging delays might cause the cigars to ship later.

The 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show takes place July 8-11 in Las Vegas.

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
