The latest edition of one of the biggest cigars on the market is on its way to stores, as CLE Cigar Co. announced that is has begun shipping the Asylum April Fool’ 2024 Year of the Dragon.

Like the previous April Fools’ releases, the Asylum April Fools’ 2024 Year of the Dragon is a 9 x 90 Honduran puro, though this year’s release comes in red tubos with gold font that play up the Year of the Dragon theme. Instead of being packaged in boxes, the cigars are sold in an ashtray that contains six tubos. Pricing is set at $42.36 per cigar and $251.16 for a six-cigar set.

The cigars are produced at The CLE Factory in Honduras, and while production numbers have not been announced, this is a limited edition release. The cigars were originally slated to be released around April 1 to tie in with its name, but delays in the production of packaging prevented that from happening.

“The Asylum cigar brand is meant to be fun and experimental,” said Tom Lazuka, co-founder of Asylum, in a press release. “The April Fools blend is not for the faint of heart. It is truly a powerhouse of a cigar with very bold flavors.”

This is the second straight year that Asylum Cigars has given its April Fools’ cigar a Chinese zodiac calendar theme; in 2023, the lid of each cigar’s coffin featured a rabbit design in celebration of the Year of the Rabbit.

Davidoff, Drew Estate, El Septimo, General Cigar Co., Gurkha, Habanos S.A. JM Tobacco, La GaleraOliva, Maya Selva,  Plasencia, Rocky Patel, United Cigars and Vega Fina have also created Year of the Dragon-themed cigars.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
