Maya Selva Cigars will once again be celebrating the Lunar New Year with a new cigar, as the company has announced the Año del Dragón 2024, which it is planning to release in mid-October.

The new limited edition is a Honduran puro, with the wrapper coming from Jamastrán, binders from Azacualpa and Olancho, and a filler that uses tobacco from throughout Honduras, according to the company. A press release describes the profile as strong with aromas of cedar and nuts.

It is offered in a 7 1/2 x 52 double corona vitola; in the U.S., the Maya Selva Año del Dragón 2024 is priced at $24.50 per cigar and $245 for a box of 10 cigars.

A total of 2,024 boxes are being produced, which will be distributed among the markets where Maya Selva’s cigars are available. The boxes have a design that brings together traditional Chinese patterns and Mayan hieroglyphics, as the company says that in both the Chinese and the Mayan cultures, animal symbolism and iconography play a crucial role in spirituality, with the ancient Maya believing that everyone has a “nahual,” a spirit animal that guides us through life.

The cigars are produced by Plasencia’s Tabacos de Oriente factory in Honduras and were formally unveiled at InterTabac 2023 in Dortmund, Germany.

Maya Selva Cigars has created cigars in celebration of the Lunar New Year since 2018, when it released the Maya Selva Year of the Pig.

The 2024 Lunar New Year takes place Feb. 10 and 2024 will be the year of the dragon.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
