After getting announced during the Procigar festival in February, De Los Reyes’ Don Julio’s Year of the Dragon Limited Edition Cigar is now arriving at stores.
It’s one of the newest releases from De Los Reyes, which is combining its Don Julio brand with the symbol for this year on the Chinese zodiac calendar: the dragon. As for the cigar, it’s a 6 x 52 toro that uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper over what the company is describing as “a secret blend, guarded by the spirits of the ancients,” which includes aged Dominican tobaccos. In the U.S., the MSRP is set at $28 per cigar, and it is limited to 800 boxes of 24 cigars worldwide.
The Don Julio line is named after Julio Samuel Reyes Fermin, who led the Reyes family’s tobacco operations as part of the third generation. Augusto “Foofy” Reyes Vargas—ceo of ARV Group and founder of De Los Reyes—is a member of the fifth generation, and De Los Reyes is led today by Nirka Reyes Estrella, who is of the sixth generation and was born in the Year of the Dragon.
As part of the auction at Procigar 2024, De Los Reyes produced a special humidor that contained 180 Year of the Dragon cigars including two exclusive sizes: a belicoso and a lancero. That humidor sold for $65,000.
Asylum, Davidoff, Drew Estate, El Septimo, General Cigar Co., Gurkha, Habanos S.A., JM Tobacco, La Galera, Oliva, Maya Selva, Plasencia, Rocky Patel, United Cigars and Vega Fina have also announced Year of the Dragon-themed cigars.
