Casa Cuevas has announced that it will be increasing the prices on its core lines as it aims to keep up with rising costs that are affecting nearly every aspect of the cigar manufacturing process.

“The price of everything has gone up,” Luis Cuevas Jr. told halfwheel. He noted that rollers are charging more, which is being driven by a shortage of workers for that position. The cost of living in the Dominican Republic has increased, which has led to increased wages for other people in the factory, such as those who handle packaging, deveining of leaves, sorting, and so on.

In addition to the cost of labor, the cost of raw materials has increased, Cuevas said. This includes both the cost to grow and process tobacco, as well as the cost to get it from its country of origin to the company’s factory in the Dominican Republic.

As a result, the company is increasing the wholesale cost of its regular production, core line cigars by seven percent, while leaving the cost of its limited editions the same.

“We are keeping everything else the same in order not to be abusive with our customers, and because, while the profit margins are lower, it makes sense to try to keep the shop keepers happy and, by default, the consumers as well,” Cuevas said in an e-mail to halfwheel.

While a select group of companies—notably Altadis U.S.A. and Davidoff of Geneva USA—announced price increases in Q3 and earlier in Q4, most cigar companies announce their price increases around the new year. Below is a list of companies that have announced whether they will have a price increase heading into 2024.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
