PCA 2023: Prometheus

It may come as a shock to some, but Prometheus has not exhibited at the PCA Convention & Trade Show since 2019; a time when this was known as IPCPR. Of course, quite a few things have changed in the cigar industry in the past four years, but one thing that can be counted on when I visit the Prometheus booth is that there will be no lack of amazing humidors, lighters, cutters, cigars and—new for this year—watch winders.

Speaking of the Prometheus booth, there were quite a few new aspects this year: a huge backdrop in the back of the booth bearing a depiction of the company’s namesake, along with new lighted display cases on either side and even a new espresso machine to make coffee for those who needed a jolt of caffeine. The company also added a thick, plush carpet, something that I appreciated after walking around the rest of the show floor for hours on end.

Keith Park, founder of Prometheus, told me that his company’s first year back at the IPCPR/PCA show was very different in two very significant ways compared to previous shows: this year, Prometheus neither orders for any of the products being shown off, nor did it open any new accounts at the show. According to Park, the reasoning behind both of those decisions was simple: he wanted to get to know his existing clients on a more personal level and told me that the act of selling products gets in the way of accomplishing that goal.

OpusX Serie Heaven and Earth Big B Humidor

This humidor includes 102 cigars and a copy of “Arturo Fuente: Since 1912,” a recent book published about the company. The humidor itself measures 21 inches x 13.5 x 8. The exterior is made of red sycamore, while the interior uses okume. Prometheus says the humidor can hold 300 cigars; it contains two trays and comes with four Prometheus Optima humidifiers. Like other Prometheus humidors, it is made in France.

Fuente Fuente OpusX BigB Macassar Travel Humidor

This six-count box is filled with six Fuente Fuente OpusX BigB cigars, a unique 6 x 74 perfecto with a flat cap. The cigar is named after Barry Herbst of BLH Industries, a company that makes cigar molds for many cigar manufacturers, including Arturo Fuente. The BigB was originally released in 2013 by Fuente Aged Selection, but this is the first time that it has been released in a widespread manner.

Prometheus Opus5, Opus6 10th Anniversary, Opus7 and Opus8 Samplers

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the release of Opus6, Prometheus is also releasing three new samplers: Opus5, Opus7 and Opus8.

These cigars are part of Fuente Aged Selection, Inc., a partnership between Arturo Fuente—which makes the cigars—and Prometheus—which makes the humidors and sells the cigars.

As is the case with the Opus6, the number of cigars in each sampler corresponds to the names—so, there are five cigars in the Opus5, six cigars in the Opus6, and so on—and each of the boxes that the samplers are sold in can also be used as a travel humidor.

For consumers, the addition of these samplers means that not only will it be easier to get most of the included cigars than it has been in the past when they had to be purchased in expensive and hard-to-find humidors but also that there will be a lot more of these cigars available for purchase.

According to Prometheus, a portion of the sales proceeds from all four of these samplers is being donated to the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, best known for its school, a campus located in Bonao, Dominican Republic, that serves kids through high school. In addition, the campus includes a clinic, activities like karate and baseball, and new schools for those looking to enter the hospitality or senior care fields. The Fuente and Newman families pay for the operation of the charity, while sales of cigars like these and other donations are used for running the school and providing food and medical care to the students, their families and the people that live in the surrounding area.

Opus5

As mentioned above, each Opus5 by Prometheus will include five different limited-edition cigars. None of the five cigars are new releases: all five have been made available in at least one sampler or humidor in the past like the Opus22, while others such as the BBMF are sold periodically at Casa Fuente in Las Vegas.

Prometheus is producing 300 Opus5 travel humidors in a red lacquer colorway that are scheduled to be released in two shipments: 150 will ship in November 2023, while the remaining 150 will arrive in May 2024.

Opus6 10th Anniversary 2023

Prometheus will be releasing 400 each of five different colors of the Opus6—Black, Blue, Macassar Ebony, Red and Yellow—all of which will carry the same retail price of $350.

Like the Opus5 above, none of the cigars contained in the Opus6 10th Anniversary are new. The Magnum O is a regular production OpusX release.

Opus7

As is the case with the Opus5, a total of 300 Opus7 travel humidors are scheduled to be released: 150 will ship in November 2023, while the remaining 150 will arrive in May 2024.

Opus8

Like the Opus5 and Opus7, the Opus8 release will include a total of 300 travel humidors: 150 will ship in November 2023, while the remaining 150 will arrive in May 2024.  

Each Opus8 by Prometheus will be sold with eight different limited edition cigars, but unlike the previous samplers, both maduro and natural wrapper versions of the Fuente Fuente OpusX BBMF, Fuente Fuente OpusX El Escorpion and Fuente Fuente OpusX Tauros the Bull will be included.

Fuente Fuente OpusX Lost City Carlito’s A

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of OpusX Lost City, Prometheus is debuting a special 9 1/4 x 47 vitola that has aged for 10 years. There will be a total of 500 boxes released: 250 will ship in November 2023, while the remaining 250 will arrive in May 2024.

According to Prometheus, $50 from the sale of each box is being donated to the Lost City Scholarship Fund to benefit the Cigar Family high school graduates.

The first of two different releases under the God of Fire KKP Special Reserve line, these four cigars—none of which are new cigars—will be available in both Black and Macassar Ebony box finishes. Only 300 boxes of each color are being released and each box is priced at $225.

With a total of 10 cigars included, the second God of Fire KKP Special Reserve release is quite a bit larger than the first version. However, the production numbers of these larger versions are the same—3oo boxes of each color—and the larger version will also be available in the same Black and Macassar Ebony box finishes as the Selection #1, with each Selection #2 box priced at $395.

Once again, none of the cigars included in this sampler are new releases; in fact, all 10 cigars are available as regular production items.

Prometheus Lighters & Cutters 2023

As has been the case for at least the past four years, Prometheus showed off new versions of its God of Fire Magma T, Magma X and Ultimo X lighters as well as the company’s God of Fire Cutter H.

However, it should be noted that while the colorways for the various products are new, none of the actual lighters and cutters are new models.

The largest of the new lighters from Prometheus is designed with a wind-resistant triple torch flame and built-in double punch cutters. Each lighter is serial-numbered and also includes a large fuel window.

Prometheus 30th Anniversary Le Cylinder Watch Winders

These watch winders were originally scheduled to be released for Prometheus’ 30th anniversary in last year, but due to the production issues related to the coronavirus pandemic, they were delayed until this year. There will be 30 winders available in two different finishes: 15 Macassar Ebony and 15 Red Sycamore.

Each winder also includes 50 God of Fire KKP Special Reserve Gran Toro and 50 God of Fire KKP Special Reserve Piramide cigars.
