Gurkha Cigar Group International has discontinued its San Miguel and Treinta lines, saying that space was needed in the company’s portfolio to make room for future growth.

“We fully recognize that shelf space is real estate in our industry,” said Juan Lopez, vp of sales for Sales at Gurkha Cigars, via a press release. “In order to continue to offer new and improved products, we have made the tough decision to discontinue a couple of the old ones.”

The Treinta, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of Kaizad Hansotia purchasing and revitalizing Gurkha, was released in September 2019, using an Ecuadorian habano rosado wrapper over a Nicaraguan corojo 99 binder and a mix of Nicaraguan fillers that include corojo 99 and criollo 98 from the Estelí and Jalapa regions. It was produced by AGANORSA Leaf and offered in three regular production sizes, coming in 21-count boxes:

The first 1,000 boxes of each size were released in limited edition commemorative boxes, while a five-count tin package with five Treinta Toros was also produced. Gurkha also released two exclusive sizes via Treinta Limitada humidors, with each humidor containing 25 of each vitola for a total of 50 cigars. Only 1,000 humidors were produced.

  • Gurkha Treinta Belicoso (6 1/4 x 52)
  • Gurkha Treinta Figurado (6 3/4 x 52)

Those cigars also were included in a second humidor release, though it’s better described as a chest that featured a fold-down front. Each chest contained 25 of each cigar, with 1,000 chests produced.

The discontinuation of the Treinta comes as the company is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a new cigar, which the company says is coming to store shelves soon. It will debut in humidor releases, and then add 10-count boxes next spring.

The San Miguel by Gurkha came out in September 2020 as a remade version of an older brand that had been made in the Dominican Republic using an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Now, it was produced in Nicaragua by AGANORSA Leaf, becoming a Nicaraguan puro using a shade-grown wrapper.

It was offered in three sizes, all offered in 20-count boxes:

While the San Miguel boxes will be going away, the cigar will still be available through Gurkha’s self-humidified sampler packs for the time being. However, once that packaging and inventory is depleted, they will not be replenished.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
