Gesinta International Tobacco Company has announced that it has appointed Ricardo Carioni as its new chief executive officer, effective immediately.

Carioni was most recently with Tor Imports as the company’s chief operating officer, a position that he announced he would be stepping down from in early June, specifically after the conclusion of the 2023 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Convention & Trade Show, which concluded this past week.

Now he moves to Spain’s leading sales and trade marketing arm of premium cigar makers from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Mexico.

“Our companies keep growing and our organizations are becoming more complex,” said Ramón Zapata, chairman of Gesinta and its importation and distribution company, La Casa del Tabaco, via a press release. “We face new challenges in the tobacco industry that require agile responses from experienced and specialized professionals. As the founder of both companies, I am delighted and truly excited to welcome Ricardo to our family and I’m confident he’ll have a fruitful career with us.”

A press release said that Carioni’s appointment is a key step in the strategic plan designed for the upcoming years, with a twofold objective of strengthening the distribution and sales of the best premium cigar brands in Spain, as well as developing sustainable growth in key areas, both in domestic and international markets.

“I feel genuinely honored to join Ramón Zapata, Pepe Palacios, Honorio Tortosa in the executive team and the Gesinta family,” said Carioni in a press release. It’s a responsibility that I take
with profound commitment and excitement, as guardians of our tobacco culture, to further strengthen, protect, grow and develop our industry.”

Carioni, who was born in Nicaragua, forged his career in the premium cigar industry as the COO of Tor Imports in Great Britain. Prior to joining the industry, he was Nicaragua’s Deputy
Ambassador to the U.K., Ireland and Iceland, as well as its representative to the United Nations Maritime Organisation and other multilateral institutions. Previously, he led strategy
and operations across various geographies for large organizations, including Tripadvisor and William Hill, according to a press release.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
