Selected Tobacco S.A. has announced that the 2024 shipment of the relatively new Atabey Black Ritos is now shipping.

The Atabay Black Ritos 2024 is a 6 1/8 x 55 toro gordo that is made with an Ecuadorian wrapper an internal blend that includes Dominican and Peruvian tobacco. According to the company, these cigars were aged for five years in rooms lined with different cedar and French oak woods at the Tabacos de Costa Rica S.A. factory, an aging process similar to one used for the Alfonso Extra Añejo, Alfonso Gran Selección and Byron 1850.

When the brand debuted in 2021, the Atabey Black Ritos was released as an NFT, a non-fungible token, and not a smokeable cigar. At the time, the company offered 10 box NFTs, while there were also 25 single cigar NFTs sold. The boxes were priced for roughly $1,000 and proceeds were donated to Cigar Rights of America. However, that changed last year when Selected Tobacco announced the Black Ritos was being released as a physical cigar to 10 different retailers across the country.

The cigars being sent to the same 10 stores that received 25-count boxes of last year’s release:

  • Ambassador Fine Cigars (Phoenix, Ariz.)
  • Byron Cigar Lounge (Schaumburg, Ill.)
  • Cigarz on the Ave (Winter Park, Fla.)
  • Corona Cigar Co. (Orlando, Fla.)
  • Franklin Cigars (Franklin, Tenn.)
  • Industrial Cigar Co. (Frisco, Texas)
  • Maxamar Ultimate Cigars (Orange, Calif)
  • Red Beard Cigar Co. (Cottonwood, Ariz.)
  • Tobacco Leaf (Robbinsville, N.J.)
  • Two Guys Smoke Shop (Nashua, N.H.)

The MSRP is set at $50 per cigar. The company has not disclosed how many cigars are being released.

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
