At 130 years, Topper Cigar Co. is the oldest continuously-operated family-owned cigar company in the U.S., still owned by a member of the Topper family today.
To celebrate the occasion, the company has begun shipping a new regular production line that is named after the year the company was founded, the Topper 1894. It uses a habano-seed wrapper that is grown in Sugar Valley, Pa., a small area in central Pennsylvania. Chris Topper, owner of Topper Cigar Co., says that he believes this is the first cigar that has been marketed for using habano-seed tobacco grown in this part of the state. In addition to the wrapper, this cigar also uses Connecticut broadleaf tobacco that is grown in the Dominican Republic, something that is becoming more frequent but is still fairly rare.
Like other Topper cigars, it is made at De Los Reyes in the Dominican Republic.
It is offered in three sizes.
- Topper 1894 Robusto (5 x 50) — $8.75 (Box of 20, $175)
- Topper 1894 Corona (6 x 44) — $8.75 (Box of 20, $175)
- Topper 1894 Toro (6 x 54) — $10.50 (Box of 20, $210)
“I was thrilled to discover a letter penned by my great-grandfather,” said Chris Topper, president of Topper Cigar, in a press release when the cigar was announced in March. “Dated 1921 and featuring a vintage Topper Cigar logo, this letter unveiled a richer narrative for our brand and positions Topper Cigar as the oldest family owned and operated cigar company in the country. In light of this historical revelation, it was only fitting to develop a new line of cigars that honors my family’s legacy and delivers a new product that appeals to today’s cigar smokers.”
