Time Out Cigars will be making its industry debut next month at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show when it shows off its first two lines in the Ohana Nui booth.

Time Out was founded by Neil Ylanan, who had a chance meeting with Ryan Rodriguez of Ohana Nui that led to the development of the line. Rodriguez led the blending process, with the two setting out to create a cigar that provided a consistent and enjoyable smoke while providing a flavor profile that a consumer would reach for every day.

The Time Out Habano, which features some red on its band, uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler, which the company says includes tobaccos from the country’s Jalapa, Condega and Estelí regions. The Time Out Maduro Sumatra, which has a blue ring on its band, uses a Sumatra maduro wrapper, again over Nicaraguan tobacco for the binder and filler, again drawing on the Jalapa, Condega and Estelí regions. Rodriguez told halfwheel that he considers both blends medium-full in their profiles. He noted that the Habano is highlighted by spice and pepper that turns smooth and creamy, which he said would pair well with a coffee or cocktail. As for the Maduro Sumatra, he said an espresso or bourbon served neat would be an ideal pairing for the blend’s key flavors of dark chocolate and tobacco.

Both blends are regular production lines and are available in the same three vitolas, a 5 x 50 robusto priced at $13, a 6 x 50 toro priced at $14, and a 6 1/2 x 50 soft box-pressed torpedo priced at $15, all of which are offered in 20-count boxes. They are produced at Origen Cigars S.A., a fairly new factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

While Time Out Cigars is a standalone company, it will be part of Ohana Nui’s portfolio as the company will handle sales and distribution. Ohana Nui also distributes 262 Cigars.

The company expects the cigars to ship to stores in late July or early August.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
