Altadis U.S.A. has announced that it has begun shipping the Saint Luis Rey Carenas Ultramar, a new cigar centered around tobacco billed as being “extra-aged” though without any kind of statement as to just how old it is.

The line uses a Nicaraguan-grown wrapper and binder, while the filler comes from Honduras and Nicaragua. It is produced at the Flor de Copan S.A. factory in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras and offered in four sizes:

  • Saint Luis Rey Carenas Ultramar Corona (5 5/8 x 45) — $9.10 (Box of 20, $182)
  • Saint Luis Rey Carenas Ultramar Robusto (5 x 50) — $9.64 (Box of 20, $192.80)
  • Saint Luis Rey Carenas Ultramar Toro (6 x 52) — $9.75 (Box of 20, $195)
  • Saint Luis Rey Carenas Ultramar Magnum (6 x 60) — $10.69 (Box of 20, $213.80)

Ultramar is an extension to the Saint Luis Rey Carenas line that was released in April 2021 and finished #23 on halfwheel’s Top 25 Cigars of 2021 list. That line uses a Nicaraguan wrapper, a Honduran broadleaf binder, and Honduran filler.

Originally, Altadis U.S.A. said the Saint Luis Rey Carenas Ultramar would be released in late February. No reason for the delay has been announced.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
