After a launch event held at the Bückeburg Castle during Habanos Day last weekend, the Romeo y Julieta Cupidos will arrive on the shelves of La Casa del Habano stores and Habanos Specialist retailers in Germany this week.

The cigar is a new, thicker belicoso vitola that measures 5 5/6 inches long (148mm) and has a 55 ring gauge, a vitola known as Veronas. In Germany, the cigar is priced at €65 ($70.17) per cigar and €1,300 ($1403.46) for a box of 20 cigars, according to a press release from 5th Avenue Products Trading GmbH, the distributor of Habanos S.A. in Germany as well as in Austria and Poland.

Habanos S.A. describes the profile of the Cupidos as “medium-strength, aromatic and delicate” in a press release.

The Cupidos is one of two new exclusive cigars for La Casa del Habano stores and retailers that have earned the designation of being a Habanos Specialist. La Casa del Habano stores are independently owned but licensed franchises from Habanos S.A., and in order to gain an LCDH license, stores must meet certain qualifications, including requirements for the type of humidor and lounge features a store has. LCDHs have access to specific LCDH-exclusive products like this and oftentimes get priority for the first shipments of new cigars. There are just under 160 locations worldwide.

Habanos Specialists, meanwhile, are expected to promote the culture and prestige of Cuban cigars, but are not required to carry as many Cuban cigars, nor are they required to meet other stipulations like aging rooms and lounges. There are more than 1,200 such locations around the world.

As for that other cigar, it is the Partagás Aliados, which measures 6 7/12 inches (167mm) long and has a 45 ring gauge, a vitola known as Delirios. Like the Cupidos, it is a new vitola for the Cuban cigar world. The Aliados is offered in 20-count boxes, which Habanos S.A. describes as “special cabinets.” That cigar went on sale in Italy in mid-April, priced at €38 ($41.01) per cigar or €760 ($820.34) per box of 20 cigars. In has since also gone on sale in Switzerland, where it is priced at CHF 50 per cigar ($56.54) or CHF 1,000 ($1,130.84) per box of 20 cigars.

Both cigars were announced during the Festival del Habano XXIII, the 2023 edition of Cuba’s annual cigar festival, which was held in late February.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
