Micallef Cigars has been on the market for a relatively short time compared to many companies, exhibiting for the first time in 2017 when the show was called IPCPR Convention and Trade Show. The booth was a much larger structure in those first few shows that easily garnered attention.

Though the PCA Convention and Trade Show was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, Micallef took that year and the next to refocus on the internal workings of the business. More specifically, the focus was on brick-and-mortar retailer sales, announcing that it had eliminated business with catalog retailers. It was so much the focus that during my booth tour, the new cigar releases almost seemed like an Oh yeah, by the way.

While the booth got updated with a clean black and gold theme, the company is still very outwardly focused on brick-and-mortar retailers. Once again, much of the focus was on literature and programs available to train the retail store staff on how to sell Micallef products, which makes sense as doing so will be both profitable for the retailer and Micallef. Oh yeah, and there is a new line being released.

Micallef Black

The only new product at the show is a maduro line called the Micallef Black. Fitting nicely with the booth’s theme, which appears to have been intentional, the cigars feature a very toothy-looking Mexican San Andrés wrapper and a striking black and gold band.

  • Wrapper: Mexico (San Andrés)
  • Binder: Ecuador (Habano)
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Micallef Black Robusto (5 x 52) — $7 (Box of 25, $175)
  • Micallef Black Toro (6 x 52) — $8 (Box of 25, $200)

I have been smoking cigars since 2005 and reviewing them as a hobby since 2010. Initially, I started out small with a 50-count humidor and only smoking one or two cigars a month. Not knowing anybody else that smoked cigars, it was only an occasional hobby that I took part in. In March of 2010, I joined Nublive and Cigar Asylum, connecting me with many people who also shared an interest in cigars. Reading what they had to say about brands I had never heard of, I quickly immersed myself in the boutique brands of the industry and it was then that cigars transformed from a hobby into a passion.
