Matilde Cigar Co. is one of the many companies that is part of the Sutliff Tobacco booth this year, as after partnering with MLB Cigar Ventures to form SeiBel Distribution for a while, both entities have turned over that role to Sutliff. And this year, Enrique Seijas not only brought his core lines, but an exciting new project that was definitely one of the highlights from this multi-brand space.

The booth space is much like the others in the Sutliff, a black bookcase that holds as much of each company’s portfolio as it can or as can be brought to the show. While the familiar Matilde boxes are on display, Seijas had an unmarked humidor as well that held the real star of the Matilde display.

Matilde Limited Exposure No.1

For its newest project, Matilde Cigar Co. enlisted the help of Tabacalera La Isla, the factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic that was opened by Hostos Fernández Quesada near the end of 2020. As the name suggests, this will be the first cigar in a series of Limited Exposure releases, as well as the first size for the blend. The company has plans to release more such cigars, starting with a single vitola and then eventually adding more. While there were samples available, the boxes and finished bands are still in production, and as such not available to photograph.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
