Battleground Cigar Co. has a very recognizable booth, but one I’ve interestingly never been inside before. The way that we cover the trade show, generally we don’t have much time for exploration outside of what we’re covering, and this is the first year I am covering Battleground.

Made to look like an old tent from the Civil War era, the booth mirrors the overall brand theme perfectly in my opinion. This year, there is only one new release from the brand, coming in a single size.

Battleground Commander Raphael Semmes

Battleground Cigars’ newest release is named for Raphael Semmes, a Confederate Navy captain in the Civil War, notably captaining the CSS Alabama, and with his 65 prizes, he became the most successful commerce raider, someone who attacked supply ships. He was promoted to rear admiral and was also briefly a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army. Of note, Semmes is the only naval officer among the generals in Battleground’s Civil War series, which was the inspiration for creating a cigar with a unique shape. The company calls it medium strength, medium to full complexity, with notes of pepper, cedar and nutmeg.

I have been smoking cigars since 2005 and reviewing them as a hobby since 2010. Initially, I started out small with a 50-count humidor and only smoking one or two cigars a month. Not knowing anybody else that smoked cigars, it was only an occasional hobby that I took part in. In March of 2010, I joined Nublive and Cigar Asylum, connecting me with many people who also shared an interest in cigars. Reading what they had to say about brands I had never heard of, I quickly immersed myself in the boutique brands of the industry and it was then that cigars transformed from a hobby into a passion.
