This Sunday, Sept. 8, Padrón will officially mark its 60th anniversary, and to kick off the festivities, the company has begun shipping its new 60th Anniversary cigar, though in very limited quantities.

The Padrón 60th Anniversary is a Nicaraguan puro that is offered in two wrapper options, one a natural and the other a maduro. When the cigar was announced in March, Jorge Padrón said that the company approached its blend the same way it does with all of its cigars, to simply make it taste good.

“My father said that a cigar doesn’t have to be a sledgehammer over your head,” Padrón told halfwheel at the time, adding that the 60th Anniversary was blended to taste balanced and have complexity.

It is offered in a perfecto vitola that measures 6 inches long and has a ring gauge that spans from 48 at its most slender to 56 at its thickest, and unlike the box press that most of the company’s higher-end releases get, these cigars are round.

Each cigar is presented in a coffin, with 10 cigars per box and pricing set at $75 per cigar and $750 per box.

While the Padrón 60th Anniversary will be an ongoing release, production is also extremely limited, as just one pair is producing the cigars at Tabacos Cubanica S.A., the company’s factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. Padrón declined to say how many cigars were released in this first shipment, other than it was not a large amount. He did say that they will continue to be released little by little, with another release slated to occur in the next three to four weeks.

Padrón has also teamed up with S.T. Dupont for a set of 60th Anniversary accessories, which are due out in mid-October and include lighters, a cutter, a three-cigar case, an ashtray, and a cross-shoulder bag.

The collection is headlined by the S.T. Dupont Le Grand Dupont Padrón 60th Haute Creation, a special version of the Le Grand Dupont. This model offers both the double soft flame that can be found in S.T. Dupont’s classic Ligne 2 lighters as well as a single-flame torch lighter, which is activated by the user pushing up on the ignition roller. This version of the Le Grand will make the iconic “ping” sound the company is known for.

The Ligne 2 Padrón 60th Haute Creation (L) and Ligne 2 Padrón 60th (R).

There will also be an accompanying Ligne 2 version that features the same design work. Both of these lighters will be limited to 88 numbered pieces. They are part of S.T. Dupont’s flagship Haute Creation series, which means they are made-to-order pieces.

There are also brown and gold versions of the Le Grand Dupont and Ligne 2 lighters, which feature the signature of José O. Padrón, the company’s founder, and the Padrón logo.

These two lighters will be produced in greater quantities, though S.T. Dupont did not disclose the production numbers when they were shown off at the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show.

There’s a fifth lighter, a special version of the Biggy, a flat flame model that S.T. Dupont introduced last year. It was previously known as the Big D. As pictured earlier in this post, the Cigar Stand Cutter, a double guillotine cutter that folds to function as a cigar stand, is also getting a design celebrating Padrón’s 60th Anniversary.

S.T. Dupont will handle sales of the accessories, which means they will be sold by Coles of London in the U.S. and through S.T. Dupont’s distributors in international markets.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
