Jorge Pérez Martel has been named the new commercial vp for Habanos S.A., succeeding Leopoldo Cintra González, who served in the role for more than five years.

Pérez Martel, who was promoted to the head of the La Casa del Habano (LCDH) franchise network in March 2021, has more than four decades of experience with the Cuban cigar monopoly. Habanos S.A. says he helped to create the first LCDH store in Cancún, Mexico during his time as the commercial director for Importadora & Exportadora de Puros y Tabacos de CV (IEPT) and Caribbean Cigars Corp (Curazao). He also worked as the president of Corpova—the distributor for France and Moncao—and director of La Casa del Habano.

The change has been rumored for months, though Habanos S.A. gave no reason for the change.

Cintra González is the son of retired Gen. Leopoldo Cintra Frías, who served as the minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces—Cuba’s military—from 2011-2021. In January 2020, the U.S. Department of State sanctioned both Cintra Frías and Cintra González, along with other family members.
