There will be a new, larger vitola for J.C. Newman’s The American line; one that is named after the 35th Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The American Speaker Cannon will be a 6 1/4 x 60 size, the thickest for the line to-date. It’s expected to have an MSRP of $25 per cigar and will enter production next week and then aged for one year, meaning the first cigars should be ready by Nov. 5, 2024, Election Day in America.

This will be the sixth different vitola for The American line, which J.C. Newman introduced in 2019. It’s the brainchild of Drew Newman, who wanted to create an all-American cigar. Blend-wise, it uses a Florida Sun Grown wrapper from Jeff Borysiewicz’s tobacco farm in Clermont, Fla. The binder is Connecticut broadleaf from Foster Farms in Windsor, Ct., which also grows the Havana-seed tobacco used for the filler. There’s also Pennsylvania tobacco in the filler.

While the all-American blend is novel, it’s not really what makes The American unique. Every other part of the production is also made in America, something no other cigar can likely claim. That includes the bands—made by Action Label in Sanford, Fla.—and boxes—made by Millennium Wood Box in Miami. Even the cigar molds and box hinges are produced in America.

Predictably, the cigars are made in America, at J.C. Newman’s El Reloj factory in Tampa.

The cigar is named after Joseph Gurney Cannon, an Illinois Republican who served 23 terms, albeit not consecutively, in the House of Representatives from 1873-1923. That included serving as Speaker of the House from 1903-1911.

Members of the House of Representatives have their Washington, D.C. offices in one of three buildings; the oldest of which, built in 1908, is named after Cannon.
