The Joya de Nicaragua brand debuted in 1968—it was orgiainlhy named the Nicaragua Cigar Co.—and was the country’s first cigar manufacturer. A lot has changed since then, but as in years past, Joya de Nicaragua was installed the Drew Estate booth, which distributes Joya in the U.S., taking up an entire corner with its products.

While there was a new sampler and rebranded Antaño Dark Corojo to show off, the big news was the Antaño Gran Reserva.

Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva

Although the Antaño has always been a full-bodied and full strength cigar, the new line includes tobacco in the filler that has been aged up to five years, leading to what will presumably be a bit more refined profile. While two of the sizes are the same as the Antaño line, there a new vitola, namely a 5 1/2 x 52 box-pressed Robusto Grande.

I have worn many hats in my life up to this point: I started out as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, then transitioned to photographing weddings—both internationally and in the U.S.—for more than a decade. After realizing that there was a need for a cigar website containing better photographs and more in-depth information about each release, I founded my first cigar blog, SmokingStogie, in 2008. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars, and it was one of the predecessors to halfwheel, which I co-founded.
