E.P. Carrillo has begun shipping the first two blends in its Essence Series, a series that will eventually contain six blends designed to showcase six different wrappers.

The E.P. Carrillo Sumatra uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper while using two binders, one from Nicaragua and the other from Honduras, and a filler that comes from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. It is offered in three sizes, all of which are round:

  • E.P. Carrillo Sumatra Robusto (5 x 50) — $9.25 (Box of 24, $222)
  • E.P. Carrillo Sumatra Toro (6 x 52) — $10 (Box of 24, $240)
  • E.P. Carrillo Sumatra Gordo (6 x 60) — $10.75 (Box of 24, $258)

The E.P. Carrillo Maduro uses a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper, a Honduran binder, and fillers from Nicaragua. It is offered in the same three sizes and price points as the Sumatra.

  • E.P. Carrillo Maduro Robusto (5 x 50) — $9.25 (Box of 24, $222)
  • E.P. Carrillo Maduro Toro (6 x 52) — $10 (Box of 24, $240)
  • E.P. Carrillo Maduro Gordo (6 x 60) — $10.75 (Box of 24, $258)

Both lines are regular production lines produced at Casa Carrillo in the Dominican Republic.

E.P. Carrillo is scheduled to add a third line called Honduras later this year, while three lines—Cameroon, Connecticut and Nicaragua—are scheduled for release over the course of the next two years. All six lines will use the same three sizes as the Sumatra and Maduro.

“We intend to incorporate a series of educational materials to teach our smokers about each wrapper in this series we are calling our Essence Series, where the focus is all about the wrapper,” said Lissette Perez-Carrillo in a press release. She added that the boxes and bands of the cigars feature QR codes that currently lead to a landing page about the company’s blends but will soon take consumers to an interactive experience that will help match them with an E.P. Carrillo cigar based on their responses to a questionnaire.

Update (June 19, 2024) — Added information about the QR codes on the bands and boxes and added updated product images supplied by the company.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
