E.P. Carrillo has announced that it is launching a new core line called the E.P. Carrillo Sumatra, that is built around an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and which kicks off a new collection the company is calling the Essence Series.

Underneath that leaf are two binders, one from Nicaragua and the other from Honduras, while the filler comes from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. It is being offered in three sizes, all of which are round:

  • E.P. Carrillo Sumatra Robusto (5 x 50) — $9.25 (Box of 24, $222)
  • E.P. Carrillo Sumatra Toro (6 x 52) — $10 (Box of 24, $240)
  • E.P. Carrillo Sumatra Gordo (6 x 60) — $10.75 (Box of 24, $258)

The line will make its debut at the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show, which runs from March 23-25 in Las Vegas. The cigars are expected to ship in late May.

The Essence Series, which will be made up of six new blends in the next two to three years, will be distinguished by their wrappers. The first two, one of which uses a Honduran wrapper and the other of which uses a maduro wrapper of undisclosed origin, are slated to be released this year. They will be followed by Connecticut, Nicaragua and Cameroon blends. The line will also feature new packaging designed to modernize and simplify the shopping experience for consumers, keeping things simple yet eye-catching.

“We intend to incorporate a series of educational materials to teach our smokers about each wrapper in this series we are calling our Essence Series, where the focus is all about the wrapper,” said Lissette Perez-Carrillo in a press release.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
