As part of its December 2024 shipment, Viaje is reaching deep into its archives and will bring back two cigars that were last released in 2011.
The Viaje Oro Reserva (VOR) Double Torpedo and Viaje Platino Reserva (VPR) Double Torpedo will be part of next week’s shipment to retailers. If the cigars are the same as the 2011 versions, they will be 5 3/4 x 52 box-pressed perfectos that are more or less symmetrical with feet that are fully pointed in a manner like the top of a belicoso. In 2011, Viaje disclosed both blends as Nicaraguan puros with corojo 99 wrappers, each made at Raíces Cubanas in Honduras.
While Viaje is known for not increasing its prices, even when significant time has passed between releases, it has been 13 years since the last time these cigars were released, perhaps the longest time between two Viaje releases in the company’s history. The cigars have an MSRP of $12 per cigar, just a 50-cent increase from the price in 2011.
A representative from Viaje did not respond to an email seeking details about what, if anything, has changed from the 2011 releases.
Oro and Platino were once the company’s core lines, sold to retailers when stores placed an order. In early 2012, the company announced it was shifting to a “100 percent small batch” model that sees Viaje release a monthly shipment of cigars to retailers, though Viaje chooses what will be included. Unlike just about every other cigar company, retailers are unable to order specific Viaje cigars when they’d like. It also means that some Viaje releases are released near annually, while other cigars go quite some time between releases.
The VOR and VPR lines were box-pressed versions of the blends and adding aged ligero tobaccos.
Posts from Viaje on social media also indicate that the shipment will include at least one other cigar, a Holiday Blend Edición Limitada. It’s unclear what that will be, but it will not be a Candy Cane release.
Invoices sent to retailers list it as a 5 3/4 x 54 vitola that has an MSRP of $11 per cigar and comes in boxes of 30.
Those social media posts say, “This year our festive Nicaraguan puro will feature a Corojo99 Maduro wrapper and as an added surprise, Holiday Blend will arrive box pressed giving the smoke a very unique look and flavor.”
