Today, Viaje announced a new cigar called Roots, which will be the sixth release in its Craft Series and which is slated to begin shipping this coming Monday, Aug. 12.
The company made the announcement via Cigar Aficionado, and according to that report, the cigar is a 6 x 52 toro that uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and a filler that uses tobaccos from Nicaragua, Brazil and the United States. Pricing is reported to be $11 per cigar and $110 per box, with production numbers not disclosed in the announcement. It is being produced by Fabrica de Tabacos Joya de Nicaragua S.A. in Estelí.
Viaje debuted the Craft Series in 2018, calling it a line inspired by the craft beer world, and which used a design that appeared to borrow from the design of Masschusetts-based Trillium Brewing Co.’s cans. The line debuted in April 2018 with a cigar called Bales on Bales, which was produced by the Aganorsa Factory.
The second release, For the Love of the Leaf, was also produced by the Aganorsa Factory and would come out in September 2018. It would be a little over a year for the third release, Wilshire and La Jolla, which came out in October 2019 and was produced by Raíces Cubanas in Honduras. Layer Cake, also produced by Aganorsa Leaf, became the fourth cigar in the line in July 2021, while the most recent release, New Beginnings, came out in February 2023 and was produced by TABACALERA LA iSLA.
While Fabrica de Tabacos Joya de Nicaragua S.A. has not been a recent collaborator with Viaje, it was the factory that produced the company’s Oro line back in 2007 and 2008. However, Andre Farkas parted ways with the factory in 2008 when Drew Estate began handling Joya de Nicaragua’s distribution, saying in a Dec. 7, 2013 interview with Kiss My Ash Radio that he felt like he had become “in the way of what they were trying to do.”
A representative of Viaje said he was unable to comment on the accuracy of the Cigar Aficionado report, as well as to provide images of the cigar.
Update (Aug. 15, 2024) — Added an image of the cigars that was posted to the company’s social media accounts.
