The Cinco Décadas line first debuted in 2018 as a celebration of Joya de Nicaragua’s 50th anniversary. The two initial offerings were the Diadema, the first size ever produced at the factory, and El General, a nod to the pioneers of tobacco in Nicaragua. A third release, El Fundador, a tribute to the founders of the company.In 2020 we saw El Doctor released as a celebration of Dr. Alejandro Martinez Cuenca, who purchased Joya de Nicaragua in the 1990s and led the brand to where they are today.

While the blend of the Cinco Décadas hasn’t been disclosed, it does use a selection of tobacco from the company’s top inventory, which is reflected in both the MSRP and, more importantly, the profile. Smooth earthiness along with flavorful spices show the care taken in the masterful blending of the tobaccos used. While it isn’t a surprise that Joya de Nicaragua can produce a cigar at this level, it is a pleasant surprise that the Cinco Décadas will see a yearly release. If the future sizes are nearly as good as the El Doctor, then we’re all in for a treat. — Brian Burt.
