Powstanie—pronounced poh-shan-yah—was launched in 2015 by the brothers Szczepankewicz, who also own Cigar Hustler, a retail store in Deltona, Fla. The brand is named after the Polish word for “uprising” and all of the cigars in Powstanie’s portfolio so far are made at Fábrica de Tabacos Nica Sueño S.A. in Nicaragua, which is the home to RoMa Craft Tobac.

When the Powstanie Connecticut line debuted in 2023, it was the company’s first new regular production line since 2015. The Connecticut line launched with four sizes, while the Corona Gorda “Justice”—named after Mike Szczepankewicz’s son—was released last year.

Reviewers noted the massive number of flavors that showed up while smoking the Powstanie Connecticut Corona Gorda “Justice”, a list that included sourdough bread, mint, plums, cayenne pepper and two different types of nuts. With that said, one reviewer thought the blend lost some of its complexity in the final third, while another lamented the cigar’s “off-putting… dry, mushroomy flavor.”

While it did not place quite as high as the Connecticut Perfecto—which took 15th place on halfwheel’s Top 25 list in 2023—a showing on this year’s list proves just how good the Powstanie Connecticut is. Not only that, this is the second year in a row that a corona gorda from Powstanie has placed #20. — Brooks Whittington.
