At the start of 2020, if you had told me that…
That’s a sentence that has far more serious endings than a top cigar list; but at the start of 2020 if you had told me that there would be three new Tatuaje Black Label releases by the end of the year, I would have been surprised. Furthermore, there were three new, regular production Tatuaje Black Labels—a line that hadn’t received a new size in almost four years. We reviewed two of the new vitolas and the standout was the smallest Black Label to date, the Petite Corona BC.
I’ve heard Brooks Whittington say it countless times, “I just wish they would make cigar X in a petite corona.” Like Brooks, many of us enjoy the versatility of a smaller cigar and when they are done well, they can provide the flavors of the larger cigars in a more wallet- and time-friendly package. So oftentimes, the blends just don’t survive the small cigar treatment and end up disappointing. But when they are done really well, they can end up near the very top of our Top 25 list.
The Tatuaje Black Label Petite Corona BC takes everything I’ve loved in the very best Black Labels over the years—a combination of complexity and edge—and puts them into a small, sub-$5 package. While the cold weather and small size will lead people to smoke these in under 20 minutes, my recommendation is to go as slow as possible and let the flavors have time to shine. When you do you are rewarded with one of the very best cigars of 2020. — Charlie Minato.
