Pete Johnson's love of wine is a well documented fact and in 2010 he decided to release the La Vérité line, which incorporates the wine-esque practice of producing a cigar using tobacco from a single vintage and farm, which were rolled and then aged for at least a year in master cabinets. A second release followed in 2011, but the series took a hiatus for five years before returning in 2016 with blends that used tobacco from a 2013 harvest.
As with the two previous releases, the La Vérité 2013 line was shipped in two different vitolas: the 7 x 47 La Vérité and the 5 x 50 L’Esprit de Vérité. Priced at $20 each, the La Vérité came packaged in 10-, 25-, 50- and 100-count boxes, with only 21,600 total cigars produced.
While a blend made exclusively with tobacco from only one vintage grown on one farm sounds like a recipe for a linear experience, the La Vérité 2013 was anything but, with an extreme complex profile that was equal parts creamy and sweet. These are cigars that are meant to be aged, but are easily good enough now to land a spot on our list this year. — Brooks Whittington.
