A pair of new vitolas are being added to Southern Draw’s Jacobs Ladder Brimstone line this month, one of which is a single store exclusive, while the other will be notable for its distinctive size.

The first new vitola is Oblivion, a 5 x 58 perfecto that will head to Cigar Federation, and comes with an amped up blend. “We have substituted the filler combination with stronger than the original ligero tobaccos, a truly full bodied blend for those demanding palates,” said Ethan “Jacob” Holt, the namesake of the blend, via a press release. “For those that smoke this cigar, the name will almost certainly be justified,” he added.

The first batch will be limited to 4,000 cigars, priced at $49.95 per five-pack, with sales slated to start on Monday, Oct. 19.

The second new size is Un Presidente, a 9 x 48 gran corona that is often referred to as the “A” vitola, though the traditional Cuban “A” vitola is a measures 9 1/4 x 47. While the cigar is scheduled to be released just days before the election, the company says it is not a political statement, but simply a coincidence that it is coming out ahead of the vote on the United States’ next president. Rather, the cigar is named as a tribute to Cuban cigars of similar sizes.

It will be available to all retailers, though will be limited to four annual releases of 16,000 cigars, each packed in a handmade wooden cigar box and then packed into five-count wooden trays. Additionally, each cigar received 10 months of aging to deliver what the company said is a slight mellowing of the blend.

It has an MSRP of $15 per cigar and $75 for a five-count tray. The company will also be offering 10-count bundles priced at $150. Shipping of Un Presidente is scheduled to begin on Nov. 1.

“Consumers have now been enjoying the bold but approachable Jacobs Ladder blend for years, but we have developed two new ways of celebrating the triple-ligero Brimstone version after a gracious reception of the 2019 Brimstone release,” said Ethan Holt. “We decided we should make those looking for an ‘overproof’ or stronger than normal smoking experience, a size that truly demonstrates the predominantly bold flavors and aromas of this blend,” he added.

The Jacobs Ladder blend uses a Pennsylvania broadleaf maduro wrapper and binder, while the filler is made of Nicaraguan ligero tobaccos. It is produced at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
