A proposed smoking ban that would ban smoking in all private businesses in Conway, S.C. will get its first vote at tonight’s city council meeting.

The council announced its intention to bring a smoking ban ordinance to a vote in early December, and while it must go through two votes before passage, tonight’s meeting will be the first real test of how much likelihood it has of passing.

If it eventually becomes law, violators would be fined $100 and business owners would also face penalties for allowing smoking in their establishments. The ordinance would force smokers at least five feet from the entrance to a building or store before lighting up.

Tobacco stores, cigar bars and hotels will be permitted as long as the establishments have proper ventilation systems.

All facets of the bill will be up for discussion before the vote is taken, meaning that the fines, minimum distance or possible exemptions could be modified.

Conway is located about 100 miles northeast of Charleston and 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. It has a population of approximately 19,300.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
