Selected Tobacco has added a new packaging option for its Atabey Duendes, giving the 6 1/8 x 54 torpedo a very decorative tube.

The tubes are made from cosmetic-grade aluminum, a choice that Nelson Alfonso made to ensure that the packaging would have a high recycling rate while also being energy-efficient to recycle. They feature what the company calls a “golden peak” designed to protect the pointed vitola when being transported.

The Atabey line uses an Ecuadorian shade-grown wrapper, a Dominican binder, and fillers from Peru and Nicaragua. Once the cigars are rolled, they undergo five years of aging that utilizes cedar wood from five different countries and an ongoing process of humidity adjustment, creating what the company describes as a unique breathing effect that allows the cigars to both capture the cedar and cleanse the tobacco. The Atabey line is produced at Tabacos de Costa Rica in Santiago de Puriscal and offered in 12 different vitolas, ranging from the 4 x 40 Hechizos to the 8 x 50 Dioses and 7 1 /4 x 58 Benditos.

The Atabey Duendes tube is priced at $36 or $108 for a three-pack. The cigars are currently available in limited quantities.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
