On Tuesday, legislators in Pismo Beach, Calif. approved an ordinance that will bring an end to smoking in most public places and comes with significant fines for anyone in violation of the new law.

It’s an extensive ban that covers places of employment, recreation areas, outdoor or open-air dining areas, as well as 25-foot buffer zones surrounding these places.

The ban also applies to within 50 feet of any door, window or vent to a business, as well as sidewalks within the downtown core of the city and event spaces such as farmers’ markets, concerts or fairs. It is also a fine to dispose of tobacco products in or within 25 feet of an area where smoking is prohibited.

The ban was approved by a 3-2 vote and will go into effect on April 18. First-time violators will be subject to a fine of $250, while repeat offenses raise that number to $500.

Pismo Beach is home to approximately 8,200 residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
