Emergence, the first cigar from Peter James Cigar Co., is just about ready to head to retailers, with the cigar launching via Luxury Cigar Club, a cigar subscription service.

The line was announced back in mid-March and shown off at the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show. While it was scheduled to begin shipping to stores on April 15 and the cigars were ready to go, delays with the packaging resulted in the cigar not being released as scheduled. Now, members of Luxury Cigar Club’s sapphire-level subscription will be among the first to smoke the cigar, as they are receiving the 6 1/2 x 50 Toro Elegance vitola. The cigars are also available for purchase via Luxury Cigar Club’s website, though only as singles or in a pack of five, as they were shipped without the finished packaging.

Emergence has a blend that is focused on using aged tobacco, with fermentation for the tobacco lasting between three and 10 years, depending on what the company feels is the optimal point for each leaf. The wrapper is an Ecuadorian corojo hybrid viso grown in the Loja region, located south of Quevedo, which is said to be known for its volcanically enriched soil. Those wrapper leaves undergo a fermentation process that takes five years due to the low temperature required by the delicate nature of the leaves, according to the company.

The binder is a Brazilian mata fina leaf, while there is Dominican piloto cubano along with tobacco from Nicaragua and the United States in the filler. The company says the tobacco comes from five distinct regions in total.

Emergence is being offered in three sizes:

  • Emergence R 52 (5 x 52) — $60 (Box of 20, $1,200)
  • Emergence Toro Elegance (6 1/2 x 50) — $62 (Box of 20, $1,240)
  • Emergence Sublime (6 x 54) — $66 (Box of 20, $1,320)

Emergence is a regular but limited production line that is made at the Luciano Cigar Factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, by a single buncher and roller, with production limited to 100 cigars per day. The company says that “this approach not only ensures meticulous attention to detail but also maintains the exclusivity and individual character of each piece.”

Meirelles told halfwheel that there is a shipment of cigars scheduled to leave Nicaragua on Friday, and he expects to begin shipping them to retailers on Sept. 21.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
