Last night, Nestor Miranda—co-founder of Miami Cigar & Co.—celebrated his 80th birthday with a host of cigar industry luminaries. Miranda was genuinely ecstatic that Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr., Litto Gomez, Rocky Patel and others—apparently about 500 people—came by. I wish I wasn’t working last night; if there’s one person that knows how to have a good 80th birthday party, it would be the incomparably cool Miranda. As many people apparently said last night, if I’m 80 years old, I’d hope to have as much swag as Miranda.

Apparently, it was such a good party that Miranda forgot to eat dinner. Despite the lack of dinner, great party, and my relatively early morning visit to the booth, he was quite chipper and gave me a hard time for not making it. This year, the company is celebrating two major milestones: Nestor’s 80th and the 25th anniversary of the company’s Tatiana flavored cigar brand.

This year marks the first time I’ve ever stopped by the Miami Cigar & Co. booth and not seen La Aurora. As many of you know, La Aurora has taken over its U.S. distribution and therefore has its own booth. Miami Cigar & Co.’s booth has been evolving over the years, and this year felt the most modern. The lack of La Aurora means there were fewer staff people in the booth, but it didn’t change one thing this booth is known for: an endless supply of Nespresso.

NM80

While the bands and boxes suggest that this is called Nestor Miranda Collection 80th Anniversary, the cigar is officially being called the NM80. To create the line, Jason Wood, vp of Miami Cigar & Co. and Nestor Miranda’s son-in-law enlisted the help of My Father Cigars, who came up with a Nicaraguan puro that is designed to have a medium-bodied profile. — Patrick Lagreid.

Tatiana 25th Anniversary

While the Tatiana brand of flavored cigars is known for smaller sizes, the company has been adding larger sizes over the last few years. I don’t know anything about what kind of flavoring this cigar has, but Tatiana has a large fanbase and I’m sure this will be sold out pretty soon.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
