I can’t recall the last time I visited with Michael Herklots that much during the trade show, for no good reason other than we both seem to be fairly busy, and I haven’t had the Ferio Tego booth for at least the last two years. There’s usually at least some interaction, but far less than I’d like given how insightful and useful I find the conversations with Herklots to be.

So I was excited to see that I was tasked with stopping by the booth this year, and even if it would likely be a quick visit as seemingly all of our visits are far too short, there might be some good nuggets to come out of it.

The booth was located just inside the entrance to the trade show, as hanging a right upon entering would put a person on a near-direct path to Ferio Tego’s space. It was wonderfully minimalist, with a couple of display cases, a structure in one corner of the space that served as both a beacon and storage area, and then a seating area to allow for conversation and order writing.

Ferio Tego Summa

This is a new line for Ferio Tego, one that Herklots said embodies the diversity and complexity of the Ferio Tego portfolio. He noted that the line’s name means “a comprehensive work” or “a summary or a synthesis of the body of work thus far,” both of which seem like fitting descriptions of what the cigar is trying to represent. Herklots noted that the blend is designed to maximize body, flavor and intensity while maintaining balance between them. The cigars are made at the Quesada family’s Tabacos de Exportación factory in the Dominican Republic.

Ferio Tego Timeless Prestige Especiales

Herklots described the new Especiales size, a petit lancero, as an extraordinary expression of the Timeless Prestige brand, noting how thinner ring gauge cigars have a unique delivery and focus to their flavor and have a higher concentration to the smoke. It becomes the sixth regular production size in the line, all of which are made by the Quesada family at Tabacos de Exportación in the Dominican Republic.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
