While German Engineered Cigars has generally announced its new products ahead of the trade show opening, I’m always intrigued to stop by and see just what they might have in the booth that wasn’t announced or otherwise catches my eye, and this year, there were two things.

First, the company was sharing its space with Les Fines Lames, whose products you will read about in another post. Second, German Engineered was showing off a new line that featured a glow-in-the-dark cigar band, something that is not always easy to do under the lights of a convention center.

As I have come to expect, the booth is clean and straightforward in its presentation—well engineered from a design perspective, you could say—with a couple of display cases, a two-person seating area, and a desk that made me think of a small drafting table where a new idea could be jotted down and worked on whenever the inspiration struck.

AUTONOM Lineup Packs

German Engineered Cigars is giving consumers the opportunity to pick one of the vitolas for its new line that will be coming out in November. The company developed the blend with Claudio Sgroi and calls it a dark cigar with complex aromas and a very soothing feeling. The winning size will join a 5 x 50 robusto, which has already been announced as the first size in the line and will ship in November, while the new size is scheduled to debut in February 2023. The name of the new brand has not yet been announced, but is expected to be announced in October once voting ends. And yes, the bands glow in the dark, with the company having a darkened display box in which to show it off.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
