Matilde Cigar Co. has released a new line that incorporates tobacco the company has never used in one of its blends before.

The Special Release is a 6 x 50 toro made up of a Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador covering a Nicaraguan binder and a filler blend that includes tobaccos grown in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Peru. This is the first time that Matilde has utilized Peruvian tobacco. According to Enrique Seijas, founder of Matilde Cigar Co., he was inspired to use the tobacco since his father—José Seijas, who once oversaw the massive Tabacalera de García factory that produces cigars for Altadis U.S.A.—loved to smoke cigars that included Peruvian tobacco.

Each cigar has an MSRP of $13.25 and it is sold in 24-count boxes, with only 5,000 cigars being released in the first shipment. Special Release is being made at the TABACALERA LA iSLA factory located in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

The Matilde Special Release is scheduled to begin shipping to retailers this summer.

I have worn many hats in my life up to this point: I started out as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, then transitioned to photographing weddings—both internationally and in the U.S.—for more than a decade. After realizing that there was a need for a cigar website containing better photographs and more in-depth information about each release, I founded my first cigar blog, SmokingStogie, in 2008. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars, and it was one of the predecessors to halfwheel, which I co-founded.
