On March 13, Los Altos, Calif. will consider banning smoking throughout public areas of the city, including privately-owned businesses.

The proposal would ban smoking in all “public places,” which includes businesses, patios, parking lots, sidewalks and other open spaces. It would allow for smoking in single-family residences, though would ban smoking in multi-family residences.

It’s unclear whether an exemption would be made for tobacconists; there is at least one cigar store in Los Altos.

The ordinance would cover traditional tobacco products as well as e-cigarettes and marijuana.

Los Altos is located in Santa Clara County, in what is considered Silicon Valley. It has a population just under 30,000 and is bordered by Palo Alto and Mountain View, home to Google.
