After getting a limited release in March 2023, the La Gloria Cubana Corojo de Oro is getting a second, more widespread release that is starting to arrive at retailers across the country after shipping last Friday.

The cigar is named for its binder leaf, a hybrid created by crossing two Cuban-seed tobaccos, a corojo 97-98 and pelo de oro, and that was grown in Mao, Dominican Republic. A press release from Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) described the leaf as being of wrapper quality, but instead, it is being used as a binder for this blend.

As for the wrapper, the blend uses an Ecuadorian habano leaf, while the fillers include Brazilian mata fina, Dominican piloto cubano, and Nicaraguan tobacco grown on the volcanic island of Ometepe. The profile is described as medium-bodied with notes of earth, cedar, citrus, and white pepper.

The La Gloria Cubana Corojo de Oro is offered in a 6 x 50 toro vitola that comes in boxes of 20 cigars, with pricing set at $10.49 per cigar and $209.80 per box. It is produced by the El Credito Cigar Factory, which is part of General Cigar Dominicana in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

“In creating a new tobacco varietal, our artisans developed Corojo de Oro to be a distinctive cigar that is unlike any other blend,” said Cory Beardsley, assistant brand manager for La Gloria Cubana, via a press release. “This cigar is one of those rare finds, and it’s one that delivers on its promise of providing an extraordinary smoking experience.”

Production numbers for this second release have not been disclosed, but the project is described as a limited edition. A spokesperson for STG, which owns the non-Cuban La Gloria Cubana brand, described the 2023 release as a “preview” that was limited to a select group of retailers.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
