In June, JM Tobacco released its limited edition Española Year of the Dragon to celebrate the current year on the Zodiac calendar. Citing that cigar’s success, the company is turning it into a regular production line called the Española Corojo.

The blend remains the same, with an Ecuadorian corojo habano wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés maduro binder and a filler of Dominican olor seco and ligero. While the Española Year of the Dragon was made at Tabacalera Turey S.A. in Santiago, Dominican Republic, the Española Corojo will be made by Blackbird Cigar Co. at its factory in the Dominican Republic.

It will be offered in four sizes:

  • Española Corojo Robusto (5 x 50)
  • Española Corojo Toro (6 x 50)
  • Española Corojo Churchill (6 3/4 x 50)
  • Española Corojo Belicoso (6 x 52)

All four sizes will come in 20-count boxes, with pricing still to be finalized. For reference, the Española Year of the Dragon, a 6 x 52 toro, was priced at $13 per cigar.

This becomes the third regular production line for the Española brand, joining the Española Connecticut and Española Maduro, which debuted in 1996.

The Española Corojo will make its debut at the 2025 PCA Convention & Trade Show, which happens April 11-14 in New Orleans, La. The company is scheduled to begin shipping the new line to stores on May 1, 2025.

Correction (Sept. 10, 2024) — Anto Mahroukian informed halfwheel that the original details about the blend was incorrect, as the company originally announced that it used a Connecticut broadleaf binder, and a filler that uses tobaccos grown in the Dominican Republic and Mexico’s San Andrés Valley. That has been corrected to using a Mexican San Andrés maduro binder and a filler of Dominican olor seco and ligero.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
