Hong Kong is considering banning tobacco sales to anyone born after 2008. It’s an approach that is being debated amongst a number of governments after New Zealand passed a similar measure year.

Last week, Lo Chung-mau, secretary of health for Hong Kong, confirmed that the government was considering the approach as part of a report that is expected to be announced in early 2023. Hong Kong’s parliament voted on a first draft in July though that language would not restrict the sales of vaping products. The South China Morning Post quoted a Liberal Party legislator as saying that he would support increasing the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18- to 21-years-old, but that the complete for those born after 2008 was too much.

Earlier this year, it emerged that Denmark and the United Kingdom were considering birth year based bans on tobacco sales.
