On Tuesday, Golden, Colo. became the latest city to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, as the city council approved an ordinance that will bring an end to the sale of such products as of Jan. 1, 2024.
The ban covers all tobacco and nicotine products, including cigars, vaping products, cigarettes and cigarillos that have a characterizing flavor, which the city describes as a taste or aroma, other than that of tobacco, imparted either prior to or during consumption of such product, or a product having a cooling or numbing sensation in the mouth.
The ordinance passed by a 6-0 vote with one member absent. Golden joins a handful of other cities in Colorado—Edgewater, Aspen, Boulder, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and Snowmass Village—to pass bans on flavored tobacco products.
A similar ban was passed by the Denver City Council in 2021 but vetoed by the mayor, with the council not having enough votes to override the veto. That ban contained an exemption for premium cigars, however.
A bill to ban flavored tobacco products at the statewide level passed the House of Representatives during the 2022 session, but died in a Senate committee and thus failed to advance.
Golden is home to just over 20,000 residents, and is located approximately 15 miles west of Denver.
