There will be a trio of new cigars from El Mago, and each cigar is expected to ship to stores in April.
The El Mago Pepe Box-Press Toro Tubo is a 6 x 52 box-pressed toro, the first box-pressed toro for the company. Blend-wise, it uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a broadleaf binder from the U.S. and fillers from Nicaragua. It will come in a square tube, packaged in boxes of 12 cigars.
El Mago is also introducing its first robusto, which will also be box-pressed. It’s called the El Mago Místico Box-Press Robusto and measures 5 x 50. A three-year-old Cameroon wrapper covers an Ecuadorian binder and fillers from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. It will have an MSRP of $9
Finally, the company is adding a 6 x 52 toro known as the El Cubano Toro Tubo. It uses a Connecticut destapado wrapper over a Honduran binder and fillers from Estelí, Nicaragua. The MSRP is set at $8.50 per cigar and it will come in tubes of 10 cigars.
Nick Fusco launched El Mago last year to honor his grandparents, Maria and Gonzalo Torre, who died in the collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Fla. The debut lines from the company are each inspired by Maria and Gonzalo. For example, Pepe was Gonzalo’s nickname and Místico, Spanish for mystical, references the magic between Gonzalo and Maria.
The new El Cubano cigar has a broader inspiration than the other two, referencing the Miami-Cuban culture. Gonzalo was born in Cuba and met Maria while studying in Czechoslovakia. After living in Cuba, Canada and Venezuela, the couple settled in Miami.
All three cigars are made at Miguel Pinto’s MGE Cigars Factory in Estelí.
