The first of three cigars celebrating the 20th anniversary of My Father’s Don Pepín García brand has arrived at stores.

Of the trio, the cigar arriving on shelves is the one that doesn’t come in the humidor. It’s the Don Pepín García 20th Anniversary Limited Edition, a 6 1/2 x 52 toro extra that uses a Nicaraguan habano 2000 wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Nicaragua, including pelo de oro tobacco. The cigars were rolled at My Father Cigars S.A. in Estelí. Nicaragua.

The MSRP is set at $40 per cigar and it is limited to 5,000 boxes of 20 cigars. My Father has designated 3,900 boxes for the U.S. market, meaning international markets will get the remaining 1,100 boxes.

As the name implies, this cigar is made in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Don Pepín García brand, which was launched in 2003 by José “Pepín” García, five years before the García family introduced the My Father brand. The original Don Pepín García cigars were produced at El Rey de los Habanos, a small factory in Miami’s Calle Ocho neighborhood. The Don Pepín García brand expanded to include others like the JJ, JJ Maduro and Cuban Classic.

My Father released limited edition cigars for the 10th and 15th anniversaries of the Don Pepín García line. Both of those releases were offered in a 6 1/2 x 50 toro extra size—the 15th was also offered in a robusto size—and included some pelo de oro tobacco in the filler.

Pelo de oro tobacco, Spanish for golden hair, is noted for its golden appearance, though it is perhaps more notable because Cuba banned the seed due to its propensity to develop mold. The García family has been one of, if not the strongest proponent for the tobacco outside of Cuba and often includes it in special releases.

There are two other cigars being created to mark the occasion, though those will be more limited and likely more expensive. My Father has commissioned Elie Bleu, the French humidor maker, to create special humidors, which will each come with 100 cigars, described as variations of the original Don Pepín García Blue Label blend. The cigars will use Nicaraguan tobaccos for both the binder and filler, though they will be covered in either Ecuador Connecticut shade or Nicaraguan corojo 99 wrappers.

My Father has not announced pricing or a release date for the Don Pepín García 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Humidor release, though there will only be 75 humidors created.
