At the end of January, Dissident Cigars will be releasing Heretic, a new limited edition cigar that will be an exclusive release for retailers in the midwestern part of the U.S. and an event-only cigar for other stores in the country.

The cigar is a 6 1/2 x 46 box-pressed corona larga, with a blend that uses dual Ecuadorian wrappers, one a maduro leaf, the other a rojiso that is named for its reddish hue. Underneath those leaves is an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan fillers. The company says the cigar has a medium to full profile highlighted by notes of cream, nuts, earth, light pepper and chocolate. It is produced at Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua.

“Paying homage to my roots, having a Midwest exclusive cigar is important to me,” said Cynn Coburn, owner and blender of Dissident Cigars, in a press release. “From Detroit to Flint, Michigan, and small-town Iowa, these places all play a vital role in who I am today. Resilience, perseverance, strength and personal sovereignty run deep in my blood as they do in these cities and states. I go against the grain and choose to see with my own eyes. My past and my stomping grounds helped pave the way for that mindset and taught me how to be a strong, true, undeniable Heretic.”

The Dissident Heretic will debut at Iowa Cigar Co. in West Des Moines on Jan. 31, and then be released to other retailers on Feb. 5. Coburn told halfwheel that retailers in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kentucky, North Dakota and South Dakota will have access to the Heretic for regular retail sales.

The cigar is offered in 20-count boxes, with production numbers not being disclosed.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
