Dapper Cigar Co. has announced the Cubo Sumatra, the first of its scheduled widespread releases for the upcoming IPCPR Convention & Trade Show and a line extension to its existing Cubo line.

While it shares a name with the existing Cubo Claro & Cubo Maduro, the Cubo Sumatra will come be packaged more like Dapper’s El Borracho and La Madrina lines, using dress boxes and classic cigar artwork instead of cabinet style boxes. In addition, it will incorporate a new color scheme to the edgings and bands of its packaging.

Ian Reith, founder of Dapper Cigar Co., calls the Cubo Sumatra a revisit to the original release of the Cubo brand, which came out approximately five years ago. Now, the line builds on the company’s use of Nicaraguan tobacco while adding an additional Nicaraguan varietal as well as Connecticut broadleaf to the filler to give the cigars a new level of complexity and aroma.

For the Cubo Sumatra, the wrapper is a rosado leaf grown in Ecuador by the Oliva Tobacco Co., which also grows the binder, though it comes from the Cofradia farm in Jalapa, Nicaragua. The filer also uses tobaccos from Cofradia, as well as Oliva Tobacco Co.’s Guadalupe farm in Estelí, and another Nicaraguan leaf of  undisclosed origin. Lancaster Leaf Tobacco Co. grows the Connecticut broadleaf that rounds out the filler. The company says it is medium to medium-plus in strength, while flavor lands around medium-plus as well.

The cigars are made at Nicaragua American Cigars, S.A. (NACSA) in Esteli, Nicaragua, under the supervision of production manager Raul Disla.

It is being offered in four sizes, all of which are regular production releases:

  • Dapper Cigar Co. Cubo Sumatra Corona (5 5/8 x 45) — $8.80 (Boxes of 15, $132)
  • Dapper Cigar Co. Cubo Sumatra Robusto (4 1/2 x 50) — $9 (Boxes of 25, $225)
  • Dapper Cigar Co. Cubo Sumatra Toro (6 1/8  x 50) — $9.96 (Boxes of 25, $249)
  • Dapper Cigar Co. Cubo Sumatra Gordo (6 x 54) — $10.96 (Boxes of 25, $274)

Additionally, the company is including a 10g Boveda pack at 69% relative humidity to ensure proper humidification during transit and storage.

Reith is anticipating that the Cubo Sumatra will begin shipping Cubo to retailers in late September or early October.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
